“Holiness” is the one big topic mentioned on nearly every page of the Bible that is rarely taught in today’s churches. The Wesleyan/holiness denominations and their churches, of course, preach holiness far more often than mainstream churches, but even they are sometimes reticent about God’s requirements for holiness out of fear of making the Christian life inaccessible or unattractive to the masses. So, they shift their focus to “social justice” issues or altruism, neglecting the personal holiness that should be at the root of those good works. What we wind up with is a works-based Christian experience. While it’s satisfying to feed the poor and help the needy, there is still a longing in the soul for something deeper, something that fundamentally transforms who we are, something that puts more of God into our hearts and our lives.
Holiness isn’t an optional add-on for Christians; it is the foundation of the life God expects us to live. And He empowers us to live a holy life, to live in victory over sin every single day, to live with Him oozing through us into everyday life.
